Best Time to Visit Molokini Crater

Timing is everything when it comes to experiencing Molokini. Whether you're looking for the warmest water, the best visibility, or the chance to see humpback whales, here is how to plan your visit for 2026.

The Golden Rule: Go Early

Regardless of the time of year, Morning Tours are strongly recommended. Trade winds typically pick up by noon, making the water choppy and significantly reducing underwater visibility. Most tours depart between 6:00 AM and 7:30 AM to hit the crater during the "calm window."

Seasonal Guide

Spring (March - May)

Offers a perfect balance. The winter swells have calmed, visibility peaks at 150 feet, and the water starts to warm up. Bonus: You might catch the tail end of the whale season!

Summer (June - August)

The warmest water temperatures (79-80°F). Great for families and those who get cold easily. However, this is peak tourist season—expect larger crowds at the crater.

Fall (Sept - Nov)

Often considered the "sweet spot." Warm water, calm winds, and the fewest tourist crowds. This is the best time for peaceful, uncrowded snorkeling.

Winter (Dec - Feb)

Occasional variable conditions due to ocean swells, but Molokini remains the clearest spot on Maui. Plus, you'll see Humpback Whales on the boat ride there!
