Maalaea is where most Molokini catamarans actually berth, so for a lot of visitors it is the default departure whether they chose it or not. It is worth knowing what that choice buys and what it costs, because the marketing on both sides of this question is unreliable.
How far is Molokini from Maalaea, really
Some Maalaea booking pages call it "the closest launch point to Molokini." It is not. Measured harbour-to-crater, Maalaea is the longest of the three South Maui departures:

Distances are great-circle from each harbour to the crater at 20.632°N, 156.496°W. Real crossings run slightly longer than the straight line.
So why does everyone leave from Maalaea?
Because it is a real harbour with deep-water slips. The 50 to 100 passenger catamarans that carry freshwater showers, proper heads, a galley and a bar physically cannot load off a beach or a small ramp, so they berth here. What you get for the longer crossing is a steadier boat, more daily departures to choose from, and amenities that matter on a five-hour trip. What you give up is roughly forty minutes of round-trip water time compared with Kihei.
If your priority is maximum time in the crater, book Kihei or Makena. If your priority is comfort, a big stable hull and a galley, Maalaea is the right harbour.
The wind funnel, and why Maalaea boats leave early
Maalaea sits in the saddle between Haleakala and the West Maui Mountains. That gap funnels and accelerates the trade winds straight across the bay, which is why the harbour is a world-class windsurfing spot and why afternoon returns can be a wet, upwind slog. It is also the practical reason every experienced recommendation here says the same thing: take the first boat out. Parking and check-in
- Parking: the harbour lot is paid by QR code at roughly a dollar an hour. Budget for about six hours, and bring a phone that works.
- Check in 15 to 30 minutes early. These are big manifests and the boats leave on time.
- Drive times: about 15 minutes from Kihei, 25 to 30 from Wailea, 30 from Lahaina, 35 from Kaanapali, 20 from Kahului.
